New York Times media reporter Brian Stelter recently spoke with us about the evolution of social media and its impact on this year’s election. Stelter points to the surges in activity on Twitter and Facebook during the presidential debates, suspecting more people are tuning in as a result of seeing their friends talking about the debates on social media. Stelter also looks at the frequent criticism of the media for focusing on style over substance. He argues the media does a great job of covering the substantive issues, but sometimes they do it far earlier than people are paying attention to the campaigns. He thinks the media needs to improve on this by being willing to cover things repeatedly so that more viewers are exposed to the facts.
