NYPD Commissioner William Bratton on Policing and Surveillance
NYPD Commssioner William Bratton participated in a discussion on 21st Century Leadership with Stanley McChrystal and Dana Born, moderated by David Gergen. You can watch full video of the event here.
In the clip above, Gergen asked Bratton where he is taking the NYPD in the next few years. Bratton responded:
The direction we’re going is to totally embrace the 21st century, the world of technology…the challenge in the 21st century is how do we keep the trust of the public, when we are going to be so potentially invasive into the privacy of their lives through our technology. Our cameras, our pinning systems on your cell phones. That we’re going to have so much capability—the average police officer, the average police force—to be potentially invasive in the public sector, public space, into your lives. How do we win trust and confidence, when we have so much knowledge…we have this incredible capability to track your movements, to identify where you are at any given time.
