Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with Mischa Maisky, cello

Join us for the opening of our 2017-18 concert season, with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and revered cellist Mischa Maisky in his only NYC appearance of the year.

Mischa is a true citizen of the world: “I play an Italian cello with French bows, and Austrian and German strings… I drive a Japanese car, wear a Swiss watch, an Indian necklace, and I feel at home everywhere people love and appreciate classical music.” Hear this extraordinary artist, for whom expression is paramount in music-making, in a poignant Schubert masterpiece.

The marvelous (and conductor-less) Orpheus will also perform two lush selections for string orchestra, Anton Arensky’s heart-rending tribute to Tchaikovsky, his teacher, and Tchaikovsky’s own beautiful, shimmering Serenade for Strings – one of the composer’s finest and most beloved works.

Arensky, Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, op.35a
Schubert, “Arpeggione” Sonata in A minor, for cello and string orchestra (arr. D. Tabakova)
Tchaikovsky, Serenade for Strings, Op. 48

This event is supported by Weill Cornell Center for the Performing Artist.
